Mental Health Support in Birmingham
Our mental health specialist services offer a structured, compassionate route to understanding what you are experiencing and finding the right therapeutic support. Mental health and emotional wellbeing are part of whole-person care at HOLOS, alongside our physical and holistic services.
Every journey starts with an Initial Clinical Contact: a comprehensive assessment using the biopsychosocial model. This means we look systematically at the biological, psychological and social factors that may be affecting you, rather than focusing on one symptom in isolation.
Your assessment leads to an Assessment Outcome Report, a formal record of clinical findings and recommendations that guides your formulation and the therapeutic approach that is right for you. That might be EMDR, clinical hypnosis, positive psychology coaching, mindfulness teaching or a combination.
Because HOLOS is an integrated centre, your mental health support can work alongside physiotherapy, pain management or our holistic programmes where that would help. Please note that HOLOS is not an emergency service. If you are in crisis, call 999, contact NHS 111 (option 2 for mental health) or call Samaritans free on 116 123.

Understanding Our Therapies
What each approach involves, and who it may help.
01
Clinical Hypnosis
Clinical hypnosis is a structured, evidence-based approach used in therapy to help individuals manage emotional, behavioural and physical concerns. People who enter hypnosis typically remain fully aware of their surroundings and can end the session at any time.
It is used for a variety of concerns, including pain management, anxiety, stress, irritable bowel syndrome, sleep disturbances and habit change such as smoking cessation, addiction and phobias.
How we help
- Pain, anxiety and stress
- Sleep and IBS
- Habit change and phobias
02
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)
EMDR is a psychotherapy originally developed to treat post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and it is now applied to other concerns too. It supports the brain to reprocess traumatic memories that were not fully processed.
This can allow a less intense emotional response to the memory, while also helping to develop more helpful beliefs about yourself. It is typically used for trauma, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, depression and a number of other conditions.
How we help
- Trauma and PTSD
- Anxiety, panic and phobias
- Depression and related concerns
03
Positive Psychology Coaching
Positive psychology coaching is a science-based, strengths-focused approach that helps you achieve meaningful goals and enhance wellbeing by building on what already works for you.
It recognises life experience, emotions, resilience and individual strengths, and uses structured conversations, goal setting, wellness planning and action plans to support personal and professional growth.
How we help
- Strengths and resilience
- Clear goals and action plans
- Personal and professional growth
04
Mindfulness Teaching
Mindfulness means paying attention to what is going on inside and outside of us, moment by moment. It includes reconnecting with the body and the sensations we experience, and noticing thoughts and feelings as they happen.
Studies have shown that mindfulness can help with stress, anxiety, depression and pain, and many people find it helpful whether or not they have a health-related concern.
How we help
- Stress and anxiety
- Low mood and pain
- Everyday wellbeing
05
Assessment and Your Report
Your Initial Clinical Contact is a comprehensive assessment using the biopsychosocial model, systematically reviewing biological, psychological and social factors.
The Assessment Outcome Report then documents clinical findings and recommendations, forming the basis of your clinical formulation and therapeutic plan.
How we help
- Biopsychosocial assessment
- Formal clinical findings
- Recommended next steps

What is the Assessment Outcome Report?
It is a formal document of clinical findings and recommendations, used to guide your clinical formulation and therapeutic plan.
Will I be in control during clinical hypnosis?
Yes. People who enter hypnosis typically remain fully aware of their surroundings and retain the ability to end the session at any time.
What is EMDR used for?
EMDR was originally developed for PTSD and is now also used for trauma, anxiety, panic attacks, phobias, depression and other concerns. It helps the brain reprocess memories that were not fully processed.
